THE Border Leicesters of the URBA head to the sale ring in Ballymena Livestock Mart on Monday, September 28, at 5.30pm.
This is the 105th Annual Sale of Border Leicesters and on offer this year is 21 shearlings rams, 27 ram lambs, 10 ewes and seven ewe lambs.
Known in the sheep industry as the ‘Great Improver’, the Border Leicester is the crossing sire for producing profitable, commercial, breeding stock. Its attributes are wide-ranging and very suitable to today’s flocks, often crossed with hill breeds to produce a half-bred lamb. The breed is known for its hybrid vigour, strong maternal qualities, and the ability to produce a valuable replacement ewe lamb and quality wether lambs.
They produce a high performing breeding ewe that has excellent maternal characteristics, producing early maturing lambs. The Border excels at producing prime lambs on a low input system and this is especially important during current times with rising input costs.
Due to Covid-19 there are a few changes to the format of the sale this year with no show while viewing of sheep is between 4pm and 5.15pm.
Live bidding and online viewing of sale will be available at ballymenalivestockmarket.com where the Covid-19 Mart Protocols can be viewed. Once again the association would like to thank Alan Carson, Natural Stock Care, for sponsoring this sale and to Fane Valley Stores, Danske Bank and J Thompson & Son for their sponsorship over the years.
