A big turnout at Rathkenny

50 July 7 1970 Rathkenny SM Farm

More than 320 young farmers from 20 clubs made Rathkenny’s first stockjudging competition an outstanding success. The event, held last week in Ballymena Showgrounds, will now become an annual event on the club’s summer programme.

A major attraction of the evening was the tug-o’-war and with six clubs taking part – Holestone, Lylehill, Lisnamurrican, Coleraine, Moycraig and Glarryford – there was keen competition. The eventual winners were Glarryford, who had a narrow victory over the Moycraig club, with Lisnamurrican lying third.

Much interest was centred around the mounted fancy dress parade from Ardvernis Riding Club. A challenge competition was also held between the Crumlin riding club and Ardvernis. In the under 15 section a team from Ardvernis won while Crumlin won the over 15 class.
