After a drought of poultry events for almost two years now. I’m so pleased to report that over the next couple of months there are a number of days out for the poultry hobbyist.
These are dates for your diary and will be a great opportunity to meet up with friends and acquaintances for a bit of craic.
Here are the events in date order:
Saturday, August 28: Belmont House Hotel Poultry Fair.
Following on from last month’s success at the first ever Poultry Fair at the Belmont House Hotel, Rathfriland Road, Banbridge, the next fair is on Saturday, August 28, from 9am to 1pm.
Sellers can arrive from 7am to set up. I’m really pleased that this event has been started as it gives the hobbyist a regular venue to meet up with our poultry friends and move on stock and obtain new birds.
The hotel is in a great location near to the A1 carriageway and refreshments are available on site.
In order to bring birds to this fair you must contact the hotel on 028 40 662517. There is a £10 charge for sellers.
All are welcome to come along and see the vast variety of poultry and waterfowl and if you are considering purchasing birds please bring along suitable boxes or cages for safe transportation of your new birds.
Hope to see you all there.
Saturday, September 4: Farmgate Poultry Fair
This is a new poultry fair that Davy Kerr has started at his farm at 26 Inishargie Road, Kircubbin, BT22 2RG.
Davy has kept pure bred poultry since he was a child and has a great interest in the preservation of our old fowl breeds.
This is wonderful news that Davy is holding this poultry fair and I would encourage anyone with a poultry interest to support this new event in a wonderful part of County Down.
If you are bringing stock to this event please contact Davy in advance through Facebook.
All are welcome to attend and catering and toilet facilities are being arranged. I hope to see you all there.
Wednesday, September 22: Balmoral Show
This year’s Balmoral Show is running from Wednesday, September 22, until Saturday, September 25, at Balmoral Park, Maze, Lisburn.
This is the largest agricultural show in the country and I’m pleased to report that the poultry section has over 700 entries.
This is a wonderful day out for the family. I hope you all enjoy this event.
Saturday, October 2: Belmont House Hotel Poultry Auction
Again this is a new event for the poultry fraternity with a poultry auction at the Belmont House Hotel, Rathfriland Road, Banbridge, on Saturday, October 2.
Poultry can be entered into this auction by contacting the hotel for a schedule and entry forms, which are to be submitted by Wednesday, September 22.
If you have never been to an auction before I can assure you these are a very enjoyable day out and as all the birds, which are sold in pairs and trios, are judged, usually only good quality birds are entered into these events.
It is great to have a number of poultry events to look forward to in the coming weeks where new stock will be available.
This helps in the preservation of our yesteryear fowl breeds that without the poultry hobbyist would most likely be lost forever.
I really hope that there will be a good turnout at all these events to secure that they continue in the future.
