ANIMAL rights activists scaled the roof of the flagship National Beef Association (NBA) 2022 Expo on Saturday morning last, armed with 15 metre banners in protest at the meat industry.
The group said they planned on staying aloft Darlington Farmers Auction Mart “indefinitely” as the industry event got underway.
Masked activists from the Animal Justice Project (AJP) were pictured standing on the roof of the building holding banners and spraying coloured smoke flares.
Speaking on Saturday, a spokesperson for the protestors said: “Justice Project Climbers have been up there for hours and are determined to stay there to make their message heard.”
The spokesperson added: “Our message to the agricultural sector, is that there is no future in animal farming”.
AJP alleged one of their members was “assaulted by a farmer”.
Durham Police are believed to have attended the scene where they worked to “bring the protest to a safe end and to minimize the impact on the wider community”.
