AREA 17 of the Pony Club had 11 Teams at the Northern Regional Championships, held at Auchlishie, North of Perth in Scotland and came home with 39 rosettes. They all went well in the Dressage, Show jumping and Eventing competitions.
The first discipline to take place was show jumping, with an incredible 25 Teams competing around a challenging course, finished off with some nail-biting speed rounds, which some parents chose not to watch! Of the 25 Teams taking part, two of the Area 17 Teams finished clear and moved on to the jump off – the East Down We Roar and Iveagh Dalmatians. East Down We Rock, Iveagh Holsteins, Iveagh Orcas, North Down and Killultagh didn’t make it into the jump off, but showed some amazing talent and potential for next year.
In the second round, the last fence was particularly bright with black in the centre, proving a daunting fence for several ponies, resulting in several refusals and a few unexpected dismounts. The Iveagh Dalmatians (Lucy Orr, Harry Purdy, Robyn Rice and Tilley Tumilty) secured an amazing first place, while the East Down We Roar (Charlotte Glenn, Emily Turley, Emma Williamson and Molly Goodwin) placed an incredible third. Killultagh Green placed 11th, North Down placed 13th, Iveagh Orcas placed 14th and East Down We Rock placed 16th.
As well as the Team results, each individual had a place also. Jack Cowan from Iveagh rode ‘Edentrillick Honey Bee’ and had everyone on the edge of their chairs, with some impressive turns in the jump off to place first overall to become the Regional Show jumping Champion!
Area 17 didn’t stop there though, with Jessica Rodgers from Killultagh riding ‘Knockbridge Magic Moments’ placing second and Lucy Orr riding ‘Jazzy Suzy’ placing third. Effie Torrens Spence from East Down finished ninth and Aoife Mallon from Tullylagan finished10th.
There were 37 clear rounds in the first round, with over 100 in the whole competition. A big thank you to Micky McCann, Iveagh Show Jumping Coach, for all his guidance – he even managed to make it onto Tiktok!
The second day of the event saw 20 teams participate in Dressage, three of which were from Area 17. The North Down Team finished in a fantastic fifth place, with Holly Blythe (finishing second in Arena A), Rachel Booth (finishing seventh in Arena B), Alice Salters (finishing 16th in Arena C) and Jessica Byrne (finishing fifth in Arena D). Iveagh had two Teams represent the club, with the Iveagh Magpies (Kara Cosgrove, Sophia Madeley, Robyn Rice and Una McClelland) finishing ninth. Iveagh sisters, Holly and Robyn Rice finished a brilliant seventh and fifth in Arena C. The Iveagh Badgers (Beth Wishart, Tilley Tumilty, Holly Rice and Catherine Cowan) were placed 15th. Congratulations to all who rode good tests!
On the third day, some might say the competition peaked, with the ever-exciting discipline of Eventing. There were 20 Teams participating. Again, Area 17 went well, with great success in the dressage and show jumping leading on to a tricky and technical cross-country course. The Iveagh Orcas (Robyn Rice, Tilley Tumilty, Lucy Orr and Catherine Cowan) were sitting fifth before the cross-country, but managed to ride incredibly to move up to second! The Killultagh Team (Ellie West, Rebecca Horner, Jessica Rodgers and Megan Cooney) came third and North Downs (Evie McKeowen, Rachel Booth, Zara Reid and Jessica Byrne) placed fifth. The Iveagh Piebalds (Harry Purdy, Jack Cowan, Una McClelland and Jennifer Tate) placed 10th and the Iveagh Skunks (Beth Wishart, Amy Burke, Sophia Madeley and Isabelle Kehoe) placed 11th. This left five Iveagh Teams in the top 11 places, a wonderful result!
In the individual competition, Arena A finished with Iveagh’s Robyn Rice in 10th place; Arena B, North Down’s Rachel Booth was fifth and Killultagh’s Jessica Rodgers placed sixth. An incredible result for Catherine Cowan riding ‘Lady Remarque’ saw them finish first in Arena C. Also in Arena C, Megan Cooney from Killultagh placed sixth; Iveagh’s Tilley Tumilty was seventh and Beth Wishart 11th; with Abbie Harkness from Tullylagan finishing 12th. In Arena D, Jessica Byrne from North Down was third; Ellie West from Killultagh was 11th and Lucy Orr from Iveagh finished 14th.
Trip organisers and supporters are very proud of all the Area 17 competitors – what a super result at the Regional Championships! The skill and hard work was evident and all those who participated should take immense pride in how they presented themselves in each competition!
