As autumn settles in thoughts turn to ploughing

IT is perhaps a sign that autumn/winter isn’t far away, when conversation turns to-wards the far from summer-like activity of ploughing matches – and indeed, the new season kicked off with the fourth annual match organised by the Society of Ploughmen Northern Ireland, held on the lands kindly granted by Mr T Thompson, Springwell Road, Bangor, att-racting just under 30 entries.

Society of Ploughmen NI sec-retary Steven Weatherup said afterwards: “We had a fantastic annual match and we’re very grateful to Ted Thompson for the use of his land. Without it there’s no match and without your support there’s no match, so thanks again Ted and thanks to all of you for your support and generosity.

“We collected the best part of £700 for our chosen charities. We will know the final total later in the week.

“The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Nicola Weir’s visit. She is a bundle of energy and interviewed quite a few people.”

Society Chairman Raymond Cl-

ifford expressed thanks to Mr Thompson, the competitors, jud-ges, points compiler, steward, David Gill of the Ploughing Academy, all those that prepared the site and marked out the plots, and everyone who helped in any way to make this first match of the season a success.

The society would also like to thank those who sponsored prizes – The Dairy Gleno, Calor Gas NI, M. Large Tree Services, Clare Farm Supplies, Lorimer Fuels and a bottle of spirits donated by Jackie Moore.

The judges were David Gill, Wilfie Gill, Brian McNally, George Murphy, Allen McAnally and William Gill.

Bertie Wilson was the steward.
