THERE was certainly no shortage of eager athletes last Saturday, with over 250 entries processed at the Meadows Equestrian Centre, Lurgan. As hosting venue to the latest Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (RUAS) national show jumping qualifiers, the gauntlet for athletes was set by resident designer, Aaron McCusker.
In the RUAS Amateur qualifier, ‘Edentrillick Leviticus’ ridden by Judith Graham, took the top honours on the day, with last year’s qualifier winner, Jacqui Bolan and ‘Maverick Na Ri’ settling into second place on this occasion.
Regular attender to the Meadows, Charlotte Harding had a successful day, picking up the red rosette and qualification in the Five-Year-Old qualifier with Lucy Johnston’s ‘Bluestone Diamond Fly’.
Winning the Six- and Seven-year-old class was Emily Turkington with her own ‘Fashion Lights’, the ‘Vigo D’Arsouilles’ mare stopped the clock in 35.23 to secure the win, ahead of Declan McParland and his own ‘Corraghoe Red’.
In the 1.35m qualifier, only three combinations navigated the course without penalty and, instead of all going forward to a jump off, decided to divide the win equally.
Show jumping continues this weekend with the continuation of the Spring and Summer series in Arena 1, whereas Arena 2 will see the return to the Unregistered Jumping for Horse and Pony riders. Both arenas commence at 9am with SJI entries taken via SJI Live and unregistered entries via the Meadows website at www.themec.co.uk. Entries for both events will close at 6pm on Friday.
