Busy weekend of show jumping at The Meadows

- Advertisment -

THE Meadows Equestrian Centre, Lurgan enjoyed a busy weekend as their SJI Autumn Horse Series continued on Saturday, August 28, following the 2021 RDS National Championships. The unregistered arena also reported a good entry on the day, with a vast array of classes being jumped in.

The day belonged to frequent visitor, Hugo McAlpine, who placed both first and second in the 1.30m class – taking first with Seamus Daly’s chestnut gelding, ‘Sully’ and second with his mother Cariad’s ‘Cyrano de Boisquillon’, with just 0.10 seconds separating them.

PONY TOUR

Sunday, August 29 saw the centre host the TRI Equestrian NI Summer Pony Tour Final. Starting off the day was the 138 80cm class; of the 11 starters, seven recorded faultless performances to ensure that the final times were to be the deciding factor. Fastest past the post on this occasion was Brooke Rafferty with ‘Jack McCann’.

A solid entry in the 138 1.10m, saw six double clears, setting a blistering time on this occasion was Zara Jane Kelly with ‘Lurganmore Little Rocket’, who maintained a seven second lead over their closest rival Charlotte McCracken.

In one of the biggest classes of the day, the 148 1.10m Warm up started the day in Arena 1. 27 starters were whittled down by resident course designer, Aaron McCusker. In a quick-footed second phase, it was Lily Tunney who set the pace, stopping the clock in 33.32 with ‘Simon Said’.

The main class of the day in Arena 1 was the 148 1.20m Plus Vital Spring Tour. 12 combinations made it through to the second phase. Of these, only nine made it through without fault, led by Ben Walsh and ‘Derryvane Belle’, second place went to Cara McFadden, with Jenny Dunlop finishing third.

In Arena 2, 128 ponies dominated the day, with many displays of talent. In the smaller classes, many of the combinations recorded a faultless performance, ensuring that the ‘Optimum Time’ employed at the final would play a crucial part in working out the final placings. In the 128 50cm, finishing just 0.03 seconds from the perfect round was Darcy Hanratty. In the 128 60cm, Ava Murphy with ‘Mylestown Lady’ were also close to perfection just 0.19 seconds away from that optimum time.

15 combinations came forward in the 128 85cm Under 10, however, not to be unnerved by resident course designer, Aaron McCusker, it was Julianna Nelson who stopped the clock in the fastest time. The final 128 class of the tour was the 128 1m. Of the 15 starting combinations, Lily Tunney with her dad’s ever-consistent ‘Scarlett’s Cromwell’ was the fastest to break the beam in 23.75 seconds, just 0.23 ahead of Juliana Nelson, who had to settle for second place on this occasion.

Completing the day in Arena 2 was the Children on Horses 1.10m/ 1.20m. Over the two sections, it was Eenna Hamilton who took home with the lion’s share of the prize money on offer.

September is proving to be a very busy month once again at the Meadows that will also see the welcome return of the TRI Inter-Schools’ League, commencing this year on September 18. For further details on all upcoming competitions, please go to www.themec.co.uk.
