CAFRE helps generation after generation of family farm businesses

PLACEMENT: Hugh Moore, BSc (Honours) Agricultural Technology student.

MY name is Hugh Moore and I’m from Aghadowey, County Londonderry. Cur-

rently I’m on my work placement year having completed second year on the BSc (Honours) degree in Agricultural Technology at CAFRE, Greenmount Campus.

Growing up on a family dairy farm, I had always an interest and a passion for agriculture. I enjoy being outside working with the livestock and milking cows. This interest led me to applying to study for BSc (Honours) in Agricultural Technology.

The reason I am studying this degree programme is because I want to learn more about farm business management and an-imal husbandry.

I plan to undertake my work placement in the animal feed industry as I am keen to learn more about animal nutrition and ration formulation. So far, I have completed work experience at Ballycairne Farms Ltd – a large farm just outside Coleraine. Working at Ballycairne provided me with experience of beef production, alongside working in a modern dairy unit. This also gave me the confidence and the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge into practice

After graduation my plan is to return to the home farm. It is my intention to take over the management of the farm in the future. I am the fifth generation on the farm – something which can’t be said by many farms around the country today. I may also do some relief milking on farms in the Aghadowey and Coleraine area.

I would highly recommend studying at CAFRE to anyone with the interest in agriculture. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Agriculture Technology Degree to date. I have gained invaluable skills and experience. The Greenmount Farms provided an excellent practical learning resource enabling me to ‘learn by doing’.
