CAFRE is set to join agri-food students from across Ireland and the UK for the 6th Annual ‘Great Agri-Food Debate’.
Six colleges and universities will debate virtually across three days from March 30 to April 1 in what promises to be an exciting and intense event.
The debate is a joint initiative between Dawn Meats and McDonald’s and CAFRE is delighted to be part of the competition for a third year, giving its students the opportunity to engage with the big issues of our times.
Sustainability and its role in the future of the agri-food industry will be central to the discussions and CAFRE’s debate team, made up of second year BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Technology students, is excited to meet competition newcomers Aberystwyth University to debate on whether ‘The livestock sector can meet the requirements for net zero’.
Other competitors include agri-food students from University of Limerick, University College Dublin, Dundalk Institute of Technology, and Waterford Institute of Technology, who will come together to debate other climate change issues such as whether plastic is the enemy of our blue planet and whether or not laboratory grown meats will replace traditional livestock farming systems.
The debate is further emphasis, if it were needed, on the importance of next generation agriculturalists and food technologists engaging in issues of common interest in the UK and Irish agri-food sectors.
Wishing the team well, George Moffett, Head of Agriculture Education, said: “Our debating team have been working hard to prepare their arguments for the debate and I am confident they will put forward a strong evidence-supported case.
“I wish them every success in the competition.”
CAFRE’s debate with Aberystwyth University will be streamed after 2pm on Thursday, April 1. Follow @discoverCAFRE or visit website www.cafre.ac.uk to find out more information on viewing details and links.
