Hello, I’m Caoimhe Hegarty and I’ve just started first year of the BSc (Hons) degree programme in Equine Management at CAFRE, Enniskillen.
I am from Fintona, County Tyrone, and got excellent grades in my A levels in Geography, History and Government and Politics. I originally intended to pursue a career in law but my passion for horses won through and I decided to follow this interest!
I enjoy show jumping and have competed in Show Jumping Ireland affiliated competitions. I have also worked for RD Equestrian in my local town. This has given me an insight into work in the sport horse sector of the equine industry.
I applied for the course through the UCAS system last autumn and was delighted to be given an offer to study at CAFRE. There are 20 students in my year group and we are all getting to know each other.
Enniskillen campus has a family atmosphere – there are about 150 students in total and it is easy to get to know one another. We had a three day induction programme which included a day of team building activities as well as much of the information that we needed to know about the course. We have also attended a number of sessions on safe working practices.
So far I am really enjoying the Principles of Equine Nutrition and Equine Anatomy and Physiology modules. I am picking up lots of information from the lecturers.
I am hoping to follow a career in the equine health sector – I am looking forward to learning about the promotion of equine health and disease prevention in modules throughout the course.
I would encourage anybody with an equine interest to apply for the courses at CAFRE. Staff are enthusiastic and helpful; practical facilities are great; there are lots of horses on site and the students are very friendly.
