WITH the easing of covid-19 restrictions, Hagans Croft held their first competition of 2021 on Saturday, May 1. The sun was shining as competitors returned to this venue to kick start the first week of Hagans Croft’s six-week show jumping league.
The day commenced with the cross-poles class. It was heart-warming to see the littlest of competitors being led over the course with the biggest smiles on their faces. Those who had been led in Hagans Croft’s show jumping league last year had obviously been practicing hard over the winter months to now be let off the lead and jump the course unassisted. Everyone within the cross-poles class received a rosette to encourage them on their show jumping career.
In the 50cm class, all fences became parallel and fences nine to 12 were timed. Maisie Elliott and ‘Moonlight’ went clear all the way in a time of 28.61 seconds, coming home with the red rosette, followed by Zara McConnell and ‘Rio’ in second place with a time of 33.41 seconds.
It was great to see a few new faces to compete at Hagans Croft in the 60cm class. Vivienne Andrews and ‘Sarah’s Pebbles’ showed everyone that cobs can be agile, when they took the course by storm in a clear time of 26.83 seconds, taking home the red rosette.
The competition started to hot up within the 70cm and 80cm classes, these classes were the largest of the day with a total of 16 competitors in each class. Melanie Talbot and ‘Calypso’ have been working hard on their show jumping and working hunter training over lockdown and this has certainly paid off. The pair went clear in a time of 21.24 seconds taking home the red ribbon in the 70cm class. Zara Smyth and ‘Charlie’ flew home in the fastest time of the day in the 80cm class with 18.23 seconds. The pair were the only ones to achieve a time of under 20 seconds throughout the day – they successfully executed all the turns within the timed section of the course and were delighted to receive the red ribbon for all their efforts!
The course was adjusted for the 90cm class, where clear rounds were getting harder to achieve. However, nothing was a problem for Ruby Kinkaid, as on both her mounts she achieved clear throughout the course, coming home first on her bay mare ‘Molly’ and third on her grey gelding ‘PJ’.
There was no-one entered for the 1.10m class, therefore the last class of the day was the 1m class, where two competitors battled it out for the top spot. Charley Hanna and Daisy Gillespie were both clear over the course of 12 fences, so it was down to who did it in the fastest time. Charley Hanna and ‘Crystal’ got there in 2.77 seconds faster, finishing in 20.87 seconds and first place.
Thank you to everyone who supported the first leg of this six-week league, Hagans Croft hopes to see you all again next week. Thanks are extended to judge Katy Saunders and to all the stewards, who make the event run so smoothly. The league continues until Saturday, June 5; this event is pre-entry only, with entries closing each Thursday at 12 noon prior to Saturday’s event. Times are posted online late Thursday evening.
To qualify for the final in week six, each horse/ pony and rider combination must compete in four out of the six weeks and within the same show jumping class. Competitors must be present at the final to be eligible for league placings. Scoring is based on a points system and details of league scores can be found on Hagans Croft’s website or facebook page. Rosettes are awarded to the first six placings each week and within the overall league placings. Everyone is welcome to compete at the final in week six, with a separate prize giving held for those competing on the day and those competing within the league.
