DESPITE the Covid-19 pandemic, I completed three years of Veterinary Nursing education at CAFRE, Greenmount campus, in December 2020, studying for the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.
This qualification permits me to join the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Register for Reg-istered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs).
The course at CAFRE involved attending college one day each week over the three years of the course combined with employment in a CAFRE approved Veterinary Training Practice.
Spending one day per week at college provided time to gain significant knowledge on the theory behind the procedures carried out in the workplace.
It also enabled the student nurses to develop bonds with their classmates and discuss how different practices work within the veterinary industry. Learning from each other as well as the support from the CAFRE tutors is essential.
The course focused on cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs, the traditional UK pets. It required hard work and was challenging, covering a variety of units together with completing assignments, exams and logging my experience from clinical practice, but it is totally worthwhile.
During my time on the course I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa to work on a conservation project. This was an incredible trip which gave me experience of working up close with some of the big five African wild animals. Studying at CAFRE has allowed me to achieve a wide range of experience to allow me to work with confidence every day in my dream job.
In my current role as a Registered Veterinary Nurse I love working with dogs, although I get great satisfaction from winning over the feisty cats. Working with medical cases brings me joy as animals are nursed back to health and recover from being critically sick. I am also involved in a variety of surgery and like to work with orthopaedic and routine surgical procedures.
I am extremely proud to be
a qualified Registered Veterinary Nurse. If you are prepared to put in the hard work and are interested in the care and welfare of animals then the Veterinary Nursing course at CAFRE could be your option.
