SAINTFIELD Show hit lucky with the weather for 2022, without a rain cloud in sight, and the sun even came out in the afternoon. Entries were good across all classes and spectator numbers were the highest they have been for many years. In addition to the usual Agricultural and Equestrian Showing classes, there were added attractions such as the dog show with over 90 dogs entered and also some wacky races for the more energetic spectators!
The farmers’ race was sponsored by Laura Meharry Chartered Accountants and won by Jonathan Fletcher. The wife/ spouse/ significant other carrying race was sponsored by Lawson dental and won by Bruce Lawson and Tori Dixon. The welly wanging competition was sponsored by Hinch Distillery and won by Connor Byrne. For the first time in many years, there was a Champion of Champion award – which went to Samara Radcliff and her saddle back sow.
As usual, the committee is very grateful to the Lawson family for providing such a beautiful venue to host the show. The show wouldn’t be possible without the financial assistance from all the sponsors across the sections. However, particular mention goes to CES Quarry Products, who year after year sponsor both monetary sponsorship and quarry products for site repair after the show is over. There is also a very dedicated group of stewards, who volunteer their time and special mention must go to Maggie McQuiston, who was commentator for the day. She kept the ‘craic’ going and walked the length and breadth of the show grounds all day covering all sections and having a go at the various activities herself – include wellie wanging!
Thanks to McVeigh contracts for roads management and Castlescreen Farm for judges and stewards catering. Special thanks to all the judges, who gave up their time and were particularly attentive to the youngest exhibitors. Thankfully, Eamon and the first aid team were not required for any incidents this year, but their presence gives a reassurance that should anything go wrong, professional help is near at hand. Thanks also to the traders, exhibitors and craft stalls for their attendance after such a lengthy break due to Covid.
Preparation is already underway to build on the strong foundation that the 2022 show has given for future years. The committee hopes to build on the show jumping entries – this was run by Ardnacashel Equestrian, who have agreed to run it for 2023. It is also hoped that there will be Dressage classes for 2023 and that the Mounted Games will return to the show if their schedule permits. Other new attractions, which are being looked into are dog agility, sheep dog demonstrations, gun dog demonstrations, additional wacky races and YFC games. It is hoped to build up the numbers of vintage exhibits and expand on the range of children’s entertainment. Roll on next year!
