A few years ago Mr Jack Fleming of Baelinstown, Swords, County Dublin, was attracted to the pedigree Friesian herd owned by Mr C H McMurray, of The Knowe Dairy Farm, Scolvan, Dromore, County Down.
Mr Fleming purchased 11 heifers from Mr McMurray for his own herd and has been so pleased with them that he recently returned to Mr McMurray for a bull.
This animal Skilly Pirate, aged 10 months, is from Skilly Kathleen and was sired by Ullswater Pirate.
Friesians bred by Mr McMurray have fared well in many herds, both north and south.
One of his cows, Skilly Beauty, has given a 2,000 gallon-plus yield two years in succession on his own farm.
Mr Fleming is also well known as a Friesian breeder and has a herd of 67 cows, chiefly pedigree stock.
Stock from the females of his previous purchase from Mr McMurray has proved successful, three RM heifers having already been recorded.
