A number of years ago I was kindly invited to judge the poultry and eggs sections at Elphin Agricultural Show in County Roscommon.
I had a fantastic time away, receiving a warm welcome from the organisers in what is a beautiful part of the world.
I was amazed at the quality of the birds on display, especially in the large fowl and waterfowl categories, with the finest display of German Pekins I had ever seen, closely followed by the Indian Runners and Aylesburys.
Last Saturday, August 27, the 43rd annual Elphin Show was held at the Co-op Livestock Market in Elphin, with poultry and egg classes being held once again and attracting exhibitors from the town itself and the surrounding area.
The poultry section was kindly judged by Karl Scanlon with Martin Dooley, from Galway, winning the All Ireland Drake and Champion Bird of Elphin Show with a white Call Drake.
The Reserve Champion award went to Tomas Hargadon from Sligo’s Buff Orpington.
Charlie Bourke, from Mayo, had best All Ireland Duck with an Aylesbury Duck.
