End of the line

The tracks which once carried thousands of pounds worth of goods to Portadown when the railway was in its hey-day, have now been ripped up to make way for the town’s new railway station.

And on Monday morning over 40 farmers and dealers gathered in the old goods station in Woodhouse Street for the public auction of 2,000 lots of railway sleepers, crossings and telegraph poles.

It was a brisk sale, lasting for about two-and-a-half hours and realising over £800.

Now the sleepers, which have carried hundreds of trains, will be used on farms and building sites.
