ILDRA (Irish Long Distance Riding Association) headed north on February 26 to the remote and rugged Cam Forest near Limavady to start their competitive endurance rides for the 2023 season.
Cam Forest is located on the Northern edge of the Sperrin Mountain range, with the mountainous trails winding through the forest and rivers providing excellent training opportunities for improving horse fitness. Riders could hardly believe the amount of sunshine and blue skies at the ride, a rare treat for February, with the forest tracks in excellent condition – even allowing for a canter!
ILDRA offered Pleasure Rides (PRs), Vetted Pleasure Rides (VPRs) and Competitive Trail Rides (CTRs) at this event, meaning there was something for every rider at Cam Forest. Attending veterinary surgeon, Sonia Serramia Ruiz MRCVS (and her young assistant María) were kept busy with both CTR and VPR riders undergoing vet checks before and after their respective rides. Congratulations go to all riders and horses taking part in a vetted ride.
Thanks go to Kirsten Conly, Kathy Conly and John Anderson for marking and organising the ride on the day. Thanks go to the Forestry Service for allowing access to Cam Forest.
ILDRA’s next ride (offering Pleasure Rides only) takes place on Saturday, March 11 at Castle Ward near Strangford. Please note that all entries must be made in advance and online via ILDRA’s website.
