National Diploma in Food Science and Manufacturing Technology student at CAFRE, Loughry Campus
MY name is Darragh McCann and I am from
Dungannon in County Tyrone. I am currently studying the National Diploma in Food Science and Manufacturing Technology at CAFRE, Loughry campus.
I made the decision to study at CAFRE when I completed my GCSEs after hearing about the National Diploma programmes through careers days at school and from my careers teacher. I had a strong interest in food manufacturing and was not interested in continuing my study with A-levels. For these reasons, the CAFRE Food Pro-grammes appealed to me when I heard about them.
I am really enjoying my course at CAFRE. I have a strong interest in food technology, in particular the development of new products. I find this very interesting and exciting.
I really enjoy participating in practical classes, including those in the science laboratories and the processing areas within the Food Technology Centre, where we can manufacture almost any type of food product. After an extended period of remote learning, it was great to have the opportunity to return to campus for a few weeks to complete the essential practicals that are part of my course.
There are a lot of benefits to studying the National Dip-loma at CAFRE, including the knowledge and skills I have been developing about many aspects of food technology and the hands-on experience to apply this knowledge in the fantastic facilities they have on campus. This brings learning to life and I have no doubt is preparing me well for a successful career in the agri-food industry.
When I complete my National Diploma in Food Science and Manufacturing Technology, I would like to pursue a career in the agri-food industry. There are so many exciting roles that I will be well-prepared to take on.
I advise anyone who is interested in pursuing a career path in food to come and study at CAFRE. The facilities are excellent and the lecturers are very supportive.
