THE Eventing Ireland Northern Region AGM took place on Thursday, January 17 in La Mon Hotel and Country Club. The evening was well attended, with over 60 members and friends of the Society braving the sub-zero temperatures on the coldest night of the year so far.
The guest speaker was World Equestrian Games Team Silver medallist Sam Watson. Sam gave an inspiring and highly entertaining speech entitled ‘Learning to Succeed’, giving great insight into what makes him tick and how he has achieved success both in business and in his equestrian career so far. Everyone left the evening after Sam’s speech feeling motivated and ready to face the year ahead.
The Northern Region are truly grateful to Sam and his wife Hannah for taking the time out of their busy schedules to attend the AGM. They were up at 4am on Thursday morning to attend High Performance Training prior to travelling to Belfast to attend the AGM – that’s dedication!
There were no new nominations to the Northern Region committee in 2019.
Office bearers for 2019 are follows:
Chairman – Catherine Abbott
Vice-Chairman – Jean Mitchell MBE
Secretary – Catherine McDowell
Treasurer – John McBride
Event Organiser – Dora Beacom
Rider representatives- Jim Newsam and Jonny Hagan
At the conclusion of the evening, the annual awards were presented. Helen Panell presented the Stinson Trophy to David O’Connor and the Turley family. This award recognises contribution to the sport of eventing by effort, endeavour and example. The Pooler Trophy, which is for International Performance, was presented by Elizabeth Hamilton to Gillian Smyth, who accepted the award on behalf of Joseph Murphy.
Christine Martin presented the John Martin Award to Paul Nolan. Paul was shocked and delighted to receive the award, which recognises someone who contributes to the advancement and promotion of eventing. Paul regularly attends Northern Region events to commentate despite living in Dublin.
The Northern Region committee is looking forward to another action-packed eventing season. The Flexi Eventing series held at the Meadows Equestrian Centre is currently underway; Baileys Horse Feeds are once again sponsoring the league, which runs until March 2 and is open to both members and non-members. The annual two-phase at Tyrella is on March 9 (again open to non-members) and the 2019 Spring Season kicks off on March 23 at Tyrella.
