SATURDAY, February 1 saw a very positive start to 2020 competitions at Hagans Croft Equestrian with the first week of their Dressage League. There were bumper entries within the Intro class and it was encouraging to see lots of competitors giving their first dressage test a go at Hagans Croft. With three competitors standing out for judge Yvonne, gaining scores 70% and above, it was first place for Megan Houston and ‘Titch’ with 74.35%. Megan was delighted with how much ‘Titch’ has developed and matured since their last dressage test in December and are now looking forward to see what this February league brings. It was second place for Jackie Hanna and ‘Bobby’ with 71.09% and third for Katie Donnelly and her new mount ‘Granstown Bobby Dazzler’ with 70.87%. Again, this was a very encouraging score for this new partnership, organisers look forward to seeing them progress throughout this five week league.

Next on the agenda was the Newcomers class. This class is open to those competitors who have been competing at Intro level, encouraging them to move up and compete in a Prelim test. Therefore, it was encouraging to see a total of eight competitors give the BD Prelim 12, 2005 test ago. Warmed up and fresh out of their Intro test, Jackie Hanna and ‘Bobby’ took on the Newcomers test and they certainly didn’t disappoint. With a score of 68%, they were awarded the red rosette on the day. There was only 0.4 of a percentage separating second and third place – with Robyn McMurray and ‘Royanna’ on 64.8% in second place, followed by Katie Donnelly and ‘Killderry Captain’ on 64.4% in third.

ELEMENTARY: Jennifer McCann and ‘Oakhill Charm’ won the Elementary class at the first week of the Hagans Croft dressage league. (FW06-560NN)

The Milligan mother-daughter duo were keen to get back to competing after having a break over Christmas and New Year and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Antoinette and ‘Kings Appraisal’ finished on a score of 70.26% to secure first place, while Keva on ‘Bannan Storyteller’ finished third with 66.58%. It was great to see Jude Adair and ‘Kevin’ back out competing again and on top form – with a score of 67.37%, they secured second place and the blue ribbon on the day.

Numbers were small in the Novice class, but talent was plentiful. Saluting to a score of 70.42%, Kate McCracken and ‘Spirit’ secured first place. It was Chloe Rooney and ‘Danny’s’ first time out competing and what a promising start to his education it was, scoring a great 69.58% and coming home with second place. Well done!

Scores were very tight in the Elementary class, with only 0.25 of a percentage separating first and second placings. However, it was Jennifer McCann and ‘Oakhill Charm’ who walked away with the red rosette for their efforts with 66.25% and Kate McCracken and ‘Spirit’ in second place with 66% coming home with the blue ribbon.

Thank you to all the competitors who supported the first leg of this five-week league – Hagans Croft hopes to see you all again next week. Thanks are extended to judges Yvonne and David Patterson and to all the stewards, who make the event run so smoothly. The league continues every Saturday until February 29 and is open to all competitors, even if you are not wishing to qualify for the league. To qualify for the final in week five, each horse/ pony and rider combination must compete in three out of the five weeks and within the same dressage class. Competitors must be present at the final to be eligible for league placings. Scoring is based on a points system and details of league scores can be found on Hagans Croft’s website or facebook page. Rosettes are awarded to the first six placings each week and within the overall league placings. Everyone is welcome to compete at the final in week five, with a separate prize giving held for those competing on the day and those competing within the league.
