THE stage was set for a fantastic weekend of jumping at the Meadows Equestrian Centre, Lurgan, when the Youngster Tour Grand Finals came to the Embankment Road venue from Thursday, August 25 until Sunday, August 28. After multiple qualifiers up and down Ireland, competitors from all areas of the island came to the Meadows to try and win their share of the huge €40,000 prize fund that was on offer over the weekend.
Over days one and two, qualified combinations pitted their wits against flowing courses designed by the in-house design team of Aaron McCusker and Jason Bridge, that resulted in some spectacular jumping and saw the crème de la crème book their places in the lucrative grand finales.
On Saturday, the first of the Youngster Tour finals took place, the Four-Year-Old Grand Finale took place in Arena 1. With a prize fund of €5,000 on offer, only nine combinations made it through the course to claim their share of the spoils.
Commencing the final day was the Eight Years and Over Grand Finale and, of those commencing the competition, four made it through to the jump off round. The eventual winner of the class was Junior rider and Meadows regular, Matthew Conlon with Marble Equine’s ‘Creevagh Ferro’ gelding, ‘Creevagh Imp II’. Finishing in second place was Victoria Golden with her own ‘Sea Point’.
The next class under starters orders was the Six- and Seven-Year-Olds. In what was deemed the best class of the day, spectators enjoyed fast-footed jumping that saw the lead change on many occasions. Just 0.04 seconds separated first and second placings, eventually the win went to Louise Craig with her own ‘Stetter’ mare, ‘Cherry Wine’. Partnered with the talented bay mare, Craig stopped the clock in 34.40 seconds. Second on this occasion was Paul McDermott with Seamus Carew’s seven-year-old mare ‘Phyllair Clover’.
The final Grand Finale to take place in Arena 1 was the Five-Year-Old Youngster Tour. €6,000 was on offer as 28 combinations came forward from the final qualifiers held on Thursday and Friday. Of the 28 starters, 19 recorded a clear round in their first outing, with 13 going on to post a double clear to take an equal share of the prize pot on offer.
The Meadows Equestrian Centre would like to thank Oonagh Kennedy for all her hard work over the duration of the league, once again it can be declared a huge success! Thanks are also extended to all the sponsors of the weekend, without whose unstinting support, competitions like this would not be a possibility and, finally, thanks to the riders, owners, grooms and all officials over the weekend.
