Two farmers who both recently underwent hip replacement operations shared a cool €75,000 between them when they appeared on the RTE One National Lottery Winning Streak TV game show.
Chris Tansey, from Swinford in County Mayo, and Tommy Durr, from Ballinagard in County Roscommon, won the top two amounts on the show, with Chris scooping €42,000 after spinning the wheel, and Tommy scooping €33,000.
Coincidentally, both men rear suckling calves and both received their lucky Winning Streak scratch cards as gifts when they were discharged from hospital.
Chris is feeling sprightly despite undergoing surgery to replace a hip in December. He said that the Winning Streak experience was an uplifting experience for him and his family. He revealed his daughter Corrina gave him a gift of the lucky Winning Streak scratch card, which landed him an appearance on the popular game show, when he came out of hospital after his operation.
The Mayo man, who was watching the show with his wife Irene and granddaughter Shauna when his name came out a fortnight ago, said he has been drowning in phone calls, good luck cards, letters, messages and good wishes and he has been on cloud nine all week.
Married for 43 years, Chris has four adult children – Damien, Adrian, Nicola and Corrina – all of whom were in the Winning Streak studio on Saturday to cheer him on. He is also a proud granddad and several of his 12 grandchildren cheered him on from the audience.
His two sons have been helping him on the farm since his surgery. Chris loves all types of sport whether its soccer, rugby, GAA, boxing or racing and admits if a sport is on TV he will watch it! He is a big Mayo GAA fan and remains hopeful of Sam Maguire coming home to Mayo, even if he has been heartbroken so many times in recent years! He has no plans for his winnings yet and will wait for the dust to settle on his Winning Streak appearance before he begins thinking of how to spend his windfall!
Meanwhile Tommy revealed he has never bought a scratch card in his life – but was gifted a Winning Streak scratch card from a family friend after his release from hospital following surgery after he had a hip replacement seven weeks ago.
That scratch card landed him a cool €33,000 on the RTE game show proving that every cloud has a silver lining.
Tommy had just returned home from Mass and had made a cup of tea when he tuned into Winning Streak two weeks ago. Despite never buying a scratch card he is still a huge fan of the show and watches religiously.
Tommy is dad to five children – Padraig, Hughie, PJ, Rosemary and Suzanne – and granddad to 15 grandchildren.
All his children and 11 of his grandkids were in the RTE studio to cheer him on in the Winning Streak last Saturday. He is delighted with the support he has received from his family, neighbours and friends.
Tommy is a suckling calf farmer and he is looking forward to getting back to work and is already feeling great post operation.
With his winnings, Tommy will look after his family and wants to take a pilgrimage to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina later in the year with a group from his parish.
