ON Saturday, March 27, five classic County and Ford tractors, complete with ploughs, assembled near Ballyquintin in County Down on a crisp spring day.
These tractors were made in the mid 70s and late 80s. They were used to plough approximately 15 acres of stubble ground close to the Irish Sea at the entrance to Strangford Lough.
Sidney Scott and Melvin Thom brought their two County 1164s. It was very good to see Ken Cooke’s rare 1254 County in action driven by Richard McDonald. Ken was using his very tidy 1973 Ford 8600.
County used the Ford 8600 skid unit to make the 1254 model. It was very interesting to compare the two tractors’ performance when both were using 5-furrow semi-mounted Kverneland ploughs.
Locals John and Stephen Mageean used their 1987 Ford TW15 series 11 complete with a 5-furrow Kverneland plough.
Everyone observed social distancing and enjoyed the day’s ploughing in this superb location in County Down.
