Forecast stormy weather avoids Lusk’s event

THE weather forecast of wind and torrential rain was on many people’s minds before Lusk’s one-day event and two-phase on Sunday, September 26. All the prayers seemed to pay off, however, and the weather gods shone favourably at Knockany, Lisburn.

The three courses, which were considerably different from the Eventing Ireland course on the previous Saturday (September 18), were all in first class condition for the eager band of competitors. Harold, Neil Knox, Alan Irwin and Cyril McIlroy worked hard to change the fences around, but still leave the galloping nature of the Knockany course.

Jenny had brought the cross-country time forward to 12.30pm for the 1m class and started the riders at one minute intervals, so avoiding the rain.

There were some who went before the bell in the show jumping and those who forgot to go through the finish in the cross-country, but otherwise it was a trouble-free day. The only casualty was David Kirkpatrick’s wall in the 70cm class, which the third competitor changed to firewood!

The event was over by 3.30pm, all in the glorious sunshine and perfect ground conditions, with riders loud in their praise of the courses.

Dressage judges, Janet Hall and Fiona Young, worked hard in the morning to set the day off and the riders completed the show jumping in the all-weather arena before preparing for the cross-country.

Great thanks must go to all the many Lusk Livery helpers, who worked tirelessly to make the day such a success.

A Show jumping League will now take place each Sunday in October, with a well sponsored final on October 31. Classes are 60cm through to 1m – all entries to Sarah Whiteside on 07840 117132.
