Four artisan cheese makers from Northern Ireland have been listed on a map of the industry created by a major Dublin-based food distributor.
La Rousse Foods, a supplier of food to restaurants and other hospitality businesses across the island of Ireland, featured Ballylisk of Armagh, Dart Mountain of Dungiven, Kearney Blue of Castlereagh, and Mike’s Fancy Cheese from Newtownards in its Map of Irish Farmhouse Cheeses.
The four local cheeses are among 53 farmhouse producers from both parts of Ireland.
Described as a business created by chefs for chefs, La Rousse has been supplying gourmet foods since 1992 using its own temperature controlled fleet of vans for a daily service to chefs throughout Ireland.
The company is now owned by Cork’s Musgrave Group, which also owns SuperValu and Centra convenience stores across Ireland.
Two of the local cheeses – Ballylisk and Kearney Blue – are essentially farm-based. The others work closely with local farms for the supply of fresh milk.
