SHANES Castle May Day Steam Rally, held over the Bank Holiday weekend on May 5 and 6, is one of the largest steam events in Ireland and is held in the beautiful and picturesque grounds of Shanes Castle Estate on the shores of Lough Neagh.
This year over 40 steam engines and working steam models are expected along with living vans, organs and machinery demonstrating how they worked in bygone times with stone crushers, saw benches, threshing and baling.
Hugo Duncan and the BBC Radio Ulster Roadshow will be broadcasting live from Shanes Castle on May Day.
A huge fun fair, mobile farms, Punch & Judy and Magic Shows are among the attractions for the younger and not so young visitors.
Vintage, classic and kit cars, classic and vintage tractors and military and commercial vehicles will fill the rally field along with motorbikes and stationary engines of yesteryear.
There will be a great variety of traders in the trade village and a huge craft marquee which is always a big attraction.
A military campsite along with vehicles and a display from D Coy features a very interesting and informative display of Land Rovers, Jeeps, motorcycles, uniforms, guns, equipment and other memorabilia from various wartime scenarios.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service will be attending on both days and will be demonstrating ‘rescues’ from vehicles involved in simulated Road Traffic Collisions including using machinery to cut car roofs off, etc.
The Molly and Johnny Poteen Show will be back by popular demand! This is a story of poteen making from long ago. Johnny and Molly (a man dressed up as a lady!) get up to some crazy antics as they go about trying to make poteen! It is hilariously funny – a show not to be missed!
There will be a catering village with a fantastic variety of foods together with two bars on site as well as ice cream vendors etc.
Well behaved dogs on leads are very welcome.
This year a Mobiloo will be on site both days to make things as disability friendly as possible for an event that takes place on grassland and stone roadways.
We advise sensible footwear for grass and stones.
A great day out for all the family.
