IRISH Pony Show Jumping team manager Gary Marshall recently returned with his team from the European Pony (Under 16) Show Jumping Championships in Bishop Burton, Britain.

Gary was very pleased that, although not securing a team medal position on this occasion, Max Wachman claimed the individual silver medal for Ireland.

“We took a very young team to Bishop Burton – two 13-year-olds, one 14-year-old and two 15-year-olds,” said Gary.

“They did extremely well, as it was their first Championships. The first round of the Nations Cup took its toll on them, but the desire and confidence came back in the second round, correcting their mistakes and putting them back in the game one fence off silver…

“The competition was so close that we had to have a jump off with France for Team Bronze. In the edge of the seat jump off, both teams delivered three clear rounds and we were just pipped by one second… It was an emotional day for all! But we didn’t come away empty-handed, as Max Wachman won Individual Silver.”

These talented riders will have learned a lot from their Championship experience and, with many years left in ponies between them, the future for winning more potential medals is looking bright.
