UNDER the watchful eyes of judges Shane Flavin and Michael Hutchinson, horse and pony foals bred for the show jumping, eventing and traditional industries attended the 2022 running of the Horse Sport Ireland Foal Championship qualifier at the Meadows Equestrian Centre.
In the first class of the day, the Eventing Pony Foal, the winner on the day was Helen Troughton’s colt by the Trakehner stallion ‘Masurenfurst’, out of a ‘Song of Freedom’ dam; the reserve was awarded to Diane Weatherup’s filly by ‘Westside Mirah’.
The Show Jumping Pony section was won by Helen Parks with a colt by the Connemara stallion ‘Carnakilly Mac Guire’, with reserve being awarded to Teresa O’Hagan’s filly also sired by ‘Carnakilly Mac Guire’.
Judging the Eventing Horse section, judges had a difficult task ahead, however after much deliberation awarded the potential Eventing foal to Gregory McCullough with a colt by ‘Cascari’ (HOLST), the dam sired by the Thoroughbred stallion ‘Ghareeb’. The reserve was awarded to Connor Wilkinson’s colt foal by ‘Colandro’ (HOLST), out of a ‘Sandro Boy’ dam.
Winning the top Traditionally bred foal was Norman Walsh with a colt foal by show jumping stallion ‘Democrat’ (ISH). The reserve was awarded to Maria Melvin’s filly foal by ‘KMS Timeless’ (TB).
In the final class of the day, it was Edel Reel’s colt that took the win in the Show Jumping Horse Foal Section. Sired by ‘Pegase Van’t Ruytershof’ (BWP) and the dam by ‘Porsch’ (BWP), the colt impressed the judges to go home with the winner’s rosette. Settling for reserve on this occasion was John Haughey’s filly by the Oldenburgh stallion, ‘Conthargos’.
