For the second successive year, Gert, a cross-bred Ayrshire from the farm of Mr W R Anderson, Killylea, County Armagh, took the “champion dairy cow” award at last week’s 101st Newry show.

Runner-up was another cross-bred, a Friesian entered by Mr Robert Mulligan, of Brague, Corbet, Banbridge.

The cattle entry was the lowest for many years and the event, held in Newry showgrounds, attracted only a few hundred spectators.

The Friesian section was the strongest supported with entries coming from Heenan Bros, of Newcastle, Messrs T R and J B Gordon, Jerrettspass, Mr Hugh Stevenson, Kilkeel, Mr R Mulligan, Banbridge, and Mr J H Reid, Banbridge.

Mr Reid’s bull, Tully Jacob, took the award for the best Friesian male, while this year’s recent Saintfield show champion, Barbican Dew Judy 5th from the Heenan herd, collected the female award.

In the sheep section, the championships in the respective sections went to Mr J H McConnell, Rathfriland (Border-Leicester); W J K McCreery, Richhill (Blackface), R A P Bryson, Loughbrickland (Suffolk) and Hugh Stevenson, Kilkeel (Mourne Mountain).
