Hi, my name is Craig Dunn. I am 18 years old and I live in Bready on my family’s suckler to beef farm.
In November 2019 I graduated with a Level 3 in Land Based Engineering from Greenmount Campus, CAFRE. I chose to study the course as my father has a contracting business and I grew up around machinery and always had a keen interest.
My course was 60 per cent classwork and 40 per cent workshops. I enjoyed the good mix of practical and theory. In my first year I went on a one day a week placement with Agri-Power in Lifford, County Donegal. Agri-Power are John Deere specialists which greatly interested me and I found the work very enjoyable.
My favourite part of the Land Based Engineering course were the practical workshops. It gave us an opportunity to apply the knowledge we had gained in the classroom. During my time at Greenmount Campus we were supplied with old CASE tractors to refurbish and rebuild.
This was a great experience and I have carried this knowledge back home. I am currently refurbishing a David Brown tractor which belonged to my grandfather and I take great enjoyment in the work.
Since leaving Greenmount this year I have spent most of my time contracting. The summer was busy with silage and the later part of the year with slurry spreading. I also do a lot of the driving jobs on the farm for my parents and family when needed.
Over the winter months I have been doing a lot of maintenance work and preparing the contracting machinery for next season.
In the future I would like to keep working on refurbishing machinery. I have a special interest in vintage tractors and enjoy the process of bringing them back to their best.
I would definitely recommend the Level 3 in Land Based Engineering in Greenmount, I gained a lot of experience there and also made a lot of good friends.
As part of our course we went on a study tour during which we saw the Massey Ferguson factory in Beauvais, France, and the New Holland Combine factory. The trip was really enjoyable and a great experience for us all.
