MY name is William Wilson and I am a BSc Food Business Management gr-
aduate from CAFRE, Loughry Campus.
I have always had a strong interest in Food Business and the course was particularly appealing to me due to the wide variety of topics that it covered. Food supply chain, lean manufacture, global marketing, procurement and logistics were some of the modules on the course.
Completing a placement year was also extremely appealing and I was fortunate to spend a very enjoyable and beneficial year in NIFCC (Northern Ireland Food Chain Certification) working on the certification of the Red Tractor and Farm Quality Assurance Scheme.
I also produce my own traditional Bronze turkeys annually for the Christmas market. My time in Loughry has been very beneficial in terms of developing my management and marketing skills in relation to this enterprise.
Since graduating in June 2019, I have commenced employment as a sales graduate with the Foyle Food Group, based in Omagh. It is an exciting fast paced work environment where no two days are the same!
At the beginning of the graduate programme I undertook nine weeks within the boning hall to gain an understanding of the process, the cuts and the various product specifications. This was extremely beneficial, and I was able to use my academic learning whilst in production.
In my sales role now I deal with customers on a daily basis, pay careful attention to price and currency fluctuations and ensure stock levels are managed.
On reflection I realise that my time in Loughry Campus has been invaluable in terms of my employment, as the modules covered provided me with the background knowledge on various topics of Food Business. The food industry can be very challenging, but equally it is extremely rewarding!
