THE weather was certainly playing ball at Mill Yard on Saturday, October 6 for the second leg of Downshire’s Working Hunter League, let’s hope it holds out for the final, which is now being held next Sunday, October 14. The course this week was certainly a flowing one, with riders commenting on how well it rode. Thanks go to Pam Fox and Heather Hillen for setting everything up on the Friday evening.

Classes this week were very well supported across the board and it was nice to see everyone having a good experience and taking on the kind words of encouragement from the series judge, Seamus Rodgers. Every class this week had a different winner than the first week, so everyone is gearing up for what promises to be a super final.

Judge Seamus Rodgers was very impressed with the Final Show competition to decide the Supreme and Reserve Champion for the day. The standard of turnout and calibre of horses was highly commended, but it was the two lovely chestnuts from Class 3 that caught his eye the most. In first place and Supreme Champion for the second leg was Pam Fox on her lovely mare ‘Bonnie Foxy Lady’, with Olivia Pele and her relatively new partner ‘Cocklehill’ filling the Reserve spot.

Prizes will be awarded at the final on Saturday, October 13 to those that have qualified, but as is usual in Mill Yard events, the final is open to everyone to come along and participate, so if you had ever thought of giving Working Hunter a go then come along and join in the fun.

Thanks go to Lucy McGuinness for the use of Mill Yard, to judge Seamus Rodgers and to Nomad Photography. The super photographs are available to purchase in different formats from the Nomadphotography NI website. Thanks also go to Downshire committee member James Hepburn, who has had a busy couple of weeks scribing for Seamus and no doubt has picked up a few valuable tips for when he makes an appearance in a Working Hunter competition! Other Downshire committee members were also out in force making sure the whole day ran smoothly, so a big thank you to Norma Herron, Lorraine Johnston, Hilary Sloan, Yvonne Maguire, Liz Breeze, Pam Fox and Zena Martin for all their contributions.
