Happy feet: keeping your horse’s feet in top condition

AT this time of year, you may have noticed that your horse or pony’s hoof condition may not be as good as it usually is. When the weather is both warm and wet, the hoof can go through periods where it absorbs lots of moisture and then dries out again very quickly in the heat. This can cause splitting and cracking, which can be both unsightly and painful.

For specific advice or if your horse appears to be in pain, always consult your farrier first and foremost, trimming and/ or shoeing your horse on a regular basis as directed by your farrier is the best way to keep your horse’s feet in top condition.

At Old Mill Saddlery, we stock a range of products that can also be used to help maintain hoof health, some of these are supplement based that can be added to their feed and others are applied directly to the hoof.

One of our most popular supplements is Farriers Formula, which is a pelleted hoof supplement that can be added as a top dressing on their normal feed or fed on its own. It provides nutrients, such as phospholipids, omega fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and important amino acids. These nutrients enable horses to build strong connective tissue proteins that are important for healthy hoof structure and growth.

Another popular supplement is Hoof First, which contains a high level of Biotin, a B vitamin, which is produced naturally in the horse’s gut, but if not produced at the correct levels it can result in thin, brittle and tender hooves.

Thrush can be a common problem as well – we stock a variety of Purple Sprays, which can help combat this or one of the products we find to be most effective is Net-Tex Frog Health, which is both antibacterial and anti-fungal and comes in a handy spray bottle.

To add moisture and also a nice shine to the hoof, we recommend Effol Hoof Oil, which is supplied with its own brush that also doubles up as a lid. It contains lanolin, bay oil and thyme and is absorbed very quickly – it is easy to see why so many customers buy this product time and time again.

For more information on any of these products, please go to www.oldmillsaddlery.com or call us on 028 9335 3268 and our customer service team will be happy to help you. They can also be viewed, along with many other products in our newly refurbished superstore based at 110 Larne Road, Ballycarry, BT38 9JN.

We kindly ask that all our store customers use the hand sanitising station provided when entering the building and to wear face coverings where possible, as per the current government guidelines. As always, we thank you for your support, patience and understanding with the measures we have put in place to help keep both our staff and customers safe.
