The UK’s Butcher’s Shop of the Year and also the best in Northern Ireland is family butcher H&J Carnduff in Newtownards, County Down.
The business, which has been based at Conway Square, the town’s main square, for 25 years, collected both titles at the annual Butcher Shop of the Year, the UK’s most important annual event for the specialist meat retailing sector.
The company impressed the expert judges in the competition, organised by the Meat Trade’s Journal, with the quality of its produce, its shop and the strength of its commitment to the development of young butchers, the future of the industry.
The company also secured its products from a range of local suppliers.
The award for the Butcher’s Display of the Year went to another Northern Ireland family butcher – McAtamney’s Traditional Butchers in Magherafelt.
The awards showcased the huge contribution of butcher’s shops, especially against the background of the coronavirus pandemic which has seen many people reconnecting with the shops for fresh and reliably sourced meat.
For 26 years, the Butcher’s Shop of the Year Awards has endorsed and supported independent butchers for their service, craft skills and quality products.
There were 13 categories which brought entries from dozens of butchers from across the UK.
Thirty-five companies were shortlisted. Another local butcher, Cunningham’s in Kilkeel, was also shortlisted in the Northern Ireland Butcher of the Year category.
The awards provide a national platform for family-run independent butchers.
