PEDIGREE bulls met a buoyant trade at Holstein NI’s 33rd annual autumn sale, hosted by Taaffe Auctions at Dungannon Farmers’ Mart.
Prices peaked at 4300gns, and following an 86 per cent clearance auctioneer Michael Taaffe confirmed that 24 bulls changed hands to average £2,776 – an increase of £180 on last year’s sale.
Sale leader at 4300gns was the seventeen-month-old Relough Complete ET PLI £672, bred by Ronald McLean, and sons Malcolm and Barry, Donaghmore, Dungannon. Sired by ABS Crimson ET, he was bred from Relough Jantana Crimson ET VG86 2yr – the number seven GPLI cow in the UK. His dam produced 12,183kgs at 4.72 per cent butterfat and 3.52 per cent protein in her first 305-day lactation. Backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams, this bull is a full sister to the former number one GPLI heifer Relough Double Crimson ET.
Next best at 4000gns was Ards Ramona PLI £617 bred by Wilson and Andrew Patton, Newtownards. This fifteen-month-old bull is a son of ABS Crimson ET, and bred from Ards Afterburner Romina VG87 who averaged 8,452kgs at 4.44 per cent butterfat and 3.78 per cent protein in two lactations. This bull is backed by 12 generations of VG and EX dams.
Philip and Simon Haffey, Portadown, realised 3650gns for the fourteen-month-old Glasson Bonus ET PLI £75. Sired by Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul ET, his dam is the home-bred Glasson Canyon Balise ET EX94 2E LP50, who gave 11,069kgs at 6.40 per cent butterfat and 3.38 per cent protein in her fourth 305-day lactation. He was bred from five successive generations of EX dams.
The McLean family’s Relough Crystal PLI £544 came under the hammer at 3400gns. This thirteen-month-old entry was sired by Bomaz Skywalker ET, and backed by nine generations of VG and EX dams. His dam Relough Supershot Crimson 2 ET EX92 averaged 12,844kgs at 4.32 per cent butterfat and 3.43 per cent protein in two 305-day lactations.
Two lots sold for 3200gns each. First to go was Wilson and Andrew Patton’s fourteen-month-old Ards SW Parker PLI £523. Another by Bomaz Skywalker ET, his dam was Ards Applejax Paris GP83-2yr who produced 7,583kgs at 4.46 per cent butterfat and 3.67 per cent protein in her first lactation.
The father and son duo also realised 3200gns for Ards Suzuki PLI £482. This fourteen-month-old bull was sired by De Su 14222 Kenobi ET, and is out of Ards Halogen Suzanne ET VG87.
Following close behind at 3100gns was the youngest bull in the catalogue, Prehen Foundation GPLI £739. Bed by Robbie and Stuart Smith, Londonderry, this eleven-month-old entry is by Denovo 14566 Crosby ET, and bred from Prehen Penley Froukje 3 ET VG88 – the number 29 GPLI cow in the UK. This one is backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams.
The ABS Crimson ET son Ards Retro PLI £517 sold for 3050gns. Backed by eight generations of VG and EX dams, his dam is Ards Silver Ruth EX92.
Bomaz Skywalker ET was also behind the breeding of the 3000gns Relough Crimsky PLI £557. Backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams, his dam was Relough Jantana Crimson 4 ET VG87-2yr.
