Hot competition at the Causeway Coast Arena Winter League Final

SUNDAY, December 19 marked the final of Causeway Coast Arena’s Winter Show jumping League and Christmas Show. The organisers and judges were delighted with the large turnout, in particular, in the pony section. Many of the competitors were clearly in the festive mood, with some super Christmas fancy dress on display.

Gillian and Elle Johnston started the morning judging the ever-popular cross-poles class, which had 14 entries and, with three riders tied in first place on league points, there was an electric atmosphere! Caleb Mitchell with his pony ‘Buzz’ and Katie Surgeoner on ‘Rocky’ finished on equal points, winning the top league prizes, with Grace McAuley and ‘Konnie’ just one point behind them. RDA pony ‘Lucy’ was the lucky recipient of a bag of feed, kindly sponsored by Feedall Pet Foods Ltd., after her rider Alex Brooks chose the lucky rosette.

There were big entries again in the Killeen Animal Health sponsored 30/40cm class and it was Jodie McKay’s time to shine, with her pony ‘Gordon’ jumping a double clear and keeping them at the top of the league placings, just one point ahead of Aoife McGarry with ‘Max A Million’ in second and Grace McAuley in third place with ‘Konnie’. Rebecca Coulter was this time the lucky winner of a bag of feed, after her young pony ‘Myla’ jumped double clear.

It was close at the top in the 50cm league table, with Aoife McGarry, Mia McKay and Jodie McKay all on equal points and their ponies did not disappoint, with all three girls going double clear and winning the 50cm league. Christina Buzas, riding RDA pony ‘Jack’ also jumped a super double clear in the 50cm class and, like ‘Lucy’, they were flying the flag for RDA Causeway Coast and Glens.

Steele’s Farm Supplies sponsored the 60cm class and Zoe McMullan with the reliable ‘KHS Dovizioso’ took the win by seven points, jumping double clear ahead of his stablemate ‘Sweetwall Zoe’, also with Zoe McMullan in the saddle. Charlotte Killen with ‘Ted’ won a voucher, kindly sponsored by Limitless Adventures, by jumping into third place and Mia McKay with ‘Sandy’ claimed fourth place. Darcy McMichael riding ‘Sparkles’ and Annie Connell riding ‘Woodie Woo’, joined the girls in the winning line up, having jumped double clears.

Aoife Milliken and ‘Beauty’ took the win in the 70cm league, just ahead of Zoe McMullan and ‘KHS Dovizioso’. Sarah Brooks with her young pony ‘KHS Zarco’, jumped double clear to slot into third place in the league and took home some hay, kindly sponsored by Ballynamaddy Farm. Ross McElwee and his pony ‘Ellie’ jumped double clear, picked the winning ticket and took home a bag of feed.

There was only one double clear in the 80cm class, which went to Rioghnach Murray riding ‘Connie’. Jessica Dunlop and her pony ‘High Flying Hughie’, having jumped consistently each week, took top place in the league, winning a rug kindly sponsored by Handy Haylage.

Cormac Murtagh with ‘Star’ took first place in the 90cm class on the day, but it was Jessica Dunlop with ‘High Flying Hughie’, who did it again and won the league with a total of 66 points! Beth McCartney on ‘Jack’ took third place on the day, bringing their league points up to 40 and enough to take second place in the league, ahead of Zoe McMullan and ‘KHS Rococco’, who jumped a lovely double clear on the day to take fourth place and third in the league placings.

Sarah Margey and ‘Princess’ jumped into first place on the day in the 1m class, but it was Zoe McMullan and ‘KHS Rococco’ who took the win the 1m league.

The horse section started with the Mandarin Palace 60cm class. There was only one double clear, Vikki Morrow and the consistent ‘Katie P’. This brought them just one point behind Fiona Watt and ‘Nellie’, who led all the way in league placings each week and took the top spot, winning a super voucher and a bottle of prosecco. Vikki Morrow fell into second place, followed by Geoffrey Glass and his young horse ‘Deano’ in third.

‘Katie P’s’ stablemate ‘Mamma Mia’ maintained her lead in the 70cm league, with Melissa Lemon in the saddle. Vikki Morrow and ‘Katie P’ settled for second place and Bethany Gordon with ‘Frank’ slotted into third.

Helen Forgrave and ‘Chance’ jumped double clear in both the 70cm and 80cm classes on the day, taking home a bag of feed.

It was Elle Moore and ‘Jack’ who took the top place in the 80cm league, riding consistently each week and winning a Weir travel voucher and rug. Kathryn McCurdy with ‘Hazel’ went into second place and Bethany Gordon with ‘Frank’ placed third.

Melanie Moorhead took the win in the 90cm class on the day, with a super-fast round on ‘Lady Phoenix’. Diane Roxborough rode a fast round to take second place with ‘Ozzie’, but it just wasn’t enough to knock Debbie Allen off top spot in the league placings! Diane settled for second in the league placings and Kathryn McCurdy slotted into third place, with Grace Johnston on ‘Eli’ in fourth.

Geoffrey Glass was the only double clear in the 1m class, which widened his points lead on Debbie Allen, who settled for second place. Diane Roxborough took third place, with Grace Johnston on ‘Eli’ in fourth in the 1m league.

Geoffrey went on to win the 1.10m league, with 70 points and took home a voucher, kindly sponsored by local farrier Paul McAleese.
