IT was a busy day for Causeway Coast Arena at the inter-schools’ show jumping on Sunday. William Brown built a challenging course for the riders and, with seven teams entered for the Open Teams Balmoral Qualifier, it was set to be an exciting and competitive day!
To start the day, six riders jumped clear rounds in the cross-poles class, with Katie Surgeoner having clear rounds on both her ponies ‘Rocky’ and ‘Tommy’. Megan Rouke jumped a lovely clear in the cross-poles class and went on to pick up a red ribbon in the 30/40cm class. Joining her, were Abigail McNamara with ‘Barbie’ and Sophie Lawlor with ‘Blue’.
The 50cm Primary Schools’ Individual class saw Katie Surgeoner with her pony ‘Tommy’ again in the ribbons, this time representing her school Drumrane PS. Joining Katie in the winning line up were Aoibhinn Kelly with ‘Cindy’ representing St. Malachy’s PS and Lacey McLaughlin with ‘Pebbles’ jumping for Termoncanice PS.
St. Mary’s College, Derry were well represented in the 75cm Schools’ Individual class and it was Zoie Dobbins with ‘Derryvane Truffles’ who took first place and Kayla O’Donnell with ‘Shara’ in second place. Local rider, Kenzie Watt representing Loreto College, Coleraine took third place with her pony ‘Reme’.
Loreto College students shone in the 85cm Schools’ Individual class and, this time, Gracie Thompson-Logan on ‘Sir Rosco’ took the top placing, with Kenzie Watt on ‘Reme’ into second place. Eimear O’Neill with ‘Starlet’ took third place, representing Holy Cross, Strabane.
However, it was St. Mary’s College who again rose to the top by taking the win in the Novice Schools’ Team 85cm class! Foyle College took second place and it was a close third for Holy Cross. The 1m Schools’ Individual class was won by Peter Morton on ‘Tynan Bobo Bear’, representing Royal School, Armagh and in second place was Katie Campbell on ‘Cloneyogan Master’ jumping for Magherafelt High School.
It was a competitive Open Teams class, especially being the last qualifier for the Balmoral championships. It was Omagh Academy who took the win, with Lori Smith on ‘Archie’; Zoe Keys on ‘Ruby’; Kate Millar on ‘Clonee Red River’ and Amy McLaughlin on ‘Rhonda’. Rockport were a close second, with Royal School Armagh in third. Omagh Academy were also deemed the worthy winners of the tack and turnout prize!
The final class of the day was the Schools’ Premiere 1.10m and this time it was Royal School Armagh who were well represented in the winning line-up, with Lucy Morton on ‘Majeika’ taking the win. Lola Rankin, jumping for Foyle College, took second place with ‘Dutch’ and in third place was Victoria Lee on ‘White Lily’, also jumping for Royal School, Armagh.
