Following a major refit Morelli’s of Portstewart has announced the creation of at least six new jobs at the iconic restaurant.
Redesigning the floorspace has allowed for more seating and at the same time doubled the carryout facilities thus requiring the increase in the workforce.
Now in its third generation of Morelli’s, the company celebrated its centenary in the area in 2011 by securing a place in the Guinness Book Of World Records when it had 2,728 people eating ice cream at the same time as it threw a massive party in the town to say thank you for so many great years.
Last week local resident Sarah Travers popped in to officially open the newly refurbished restaurant and enthused: “I was practically brought up on Morelli’s Ice Cream so it was a no-brainer when I was asked – after all, what’s not to like.”
Sarah had plenty of kind words to say about the establishment and how several generations of her own family have enjoyed the unique products. Local entertainer Brian Moore was also there and acted as host, providing music, craic and giveaways.
The occasion also had a community angle as Damian Morelli chose it as an opportunity to help raise the profile of the Zachary Geddis “Break The Silence” Trust.
Yasmin Geddis, who is Zachray’s sister, spoke of the experience of losing her brother to suicide and of the work of the Trust and, with so many parents present, it lent a poignancy to the day.
The team behind the Morelli’s brand is understandably proud to have been voted National Supreme Champions at the recent Ice Cream Alliance National Ice Cream Competition in Harrogate.
The National Champion Award is the most prestigious in the UK and is judged by the industry’s peers, the Ice Cream Alliance, which is the official trade body for the UK’s £1 billion ice cream industry.
Morelli’s won the coveted title for its Double Cream Vanilla ice cream alongside Gold Awards for the same flavour in the Open Class and Best Of The Best categories. Added to this was a Gold Award for the Morelli’s Strawberry Ice Cream.
These awards follow on from the 2018 success when no less than five accolades were achieved, including Double Cream Vanilla being crowned the best vanilla ice cream in the UK and Ireland.
The family dedicated their award to the late Guido Morelli whose passion and dedication was a massive part of the success and whom they know would be enormously proud.
They’re also quick to credit the whole team behind the brand for their hard work in the ongoing success and being able to bring these awards back to Northern Ireland
