Samuel Pinkerton, of Nutt’s Corner, Co Antrim, pictured, won the championship of the field at last week’s ploughing match organised by the Kilroot Agricultural Society on the lands of Mr R J Gault of “Rockview,” Ballycraigy, near Newtownabbey.
Samuel, who is a member of Lylehill YFC and a former YFC internationalist – he won the YFC class for three successive years – has represented Ulster on several occasions. He came third in the YFC world style class at Castledillion.
Second to Samuel in the world style open class at the Kilroot event was Laurence McMillan, of Dundonald, a former world champion.
The only girl competitor, Jean Mackey, of Ballynure, youngest member of the FarmWeek staff, came second in the amateur class and also collected the special prize for the youngest competitor.
A strong wind and showers did not deter the 32 competitors who produced some excellent work which brought favourable comments from judges Mr R A Erwin, Nutt’s Corner, Mr W T Millar, Muckamore, and Mr S Robinson, Omagh.
Mr John McDowell, chairman, Mr Samuel Simms, honorary secretary, and Mr Barry McKee, honorary treasurer, all paid tribute to the hard working committee members who acted as stewards.
The trophies and prizes will be handed over by Mrs Gault at the dinner-dance to be held in McNeill’s Hotel, Larne, tomorrow evening.
