LAKELAND Dairies & Lakeland Agri are delighted to host a Dairy Replacement Heifer Rear-ing event on the farm of Matthew and Dessie Workman, Aghadowey, on Wednesday, November 9, at 11am.
The Workman family farm runs a herd of 230 autumn calving cows. With a focus on breeding productive and long-lasting cows, good calf management is essential on the Workman farm to ensure animals calve down at 24 months of age and contribute to good herd performance.
Currently the cost of rearing a replacement heifer is estimated to be over £1,800 and the average NI heifer is 28 months old at calving. Analysis of NI herds has demonstrated that those heifers calved at 24 months last longer in the herd and produce over 7,000 litres more lifetime yield than those calved at 36 months.
The focus on the day will be on calf rearing to ensure calves get off to the best possible start on their 24 month calving journey.
Speakers include specialists from Lakeland Dairies, Lakeland Agri, Volac and Coleraine Vets. This promises to be a very informative and interactive event.
The address of the farm is 60 Moneybrannon Road, Aghadowey, Coleraine, BT51 4AA. Places are limited so please book with Niall McCarron on 07785 469219. Bookings will be on a first come first served basis.
