BANBRIDGE trainer, Gerry Cosgrave has an excellent strike rate at the East Down point to point fixture at Tyrella and added to his record on Saturday, when ‘Ballela’, partnered by Mark O’Hare, made an impressive winning debut in the four-year-old mares maiden, scoring by 15 lengths and, like the majority of winners, is now for sale.

‘Greenrock Abbey’, bought at the sales in August of last year by owner/ trainer, Denis Murphy, was another to win on her debut in the opener and will next be seen at the bloodstock sales.

‘Oscar Elite’ prevailed in the keenly fought geldings maiden, with numerous having claims prior to the final fence, but the Cormac Doyle trained winner battled best to score and yet again will head to the sales.

Local trainers enjoyed a good day, registering success in four of the six races. Armagh handler, Marshall Watson sent out ‘Well Bill’ to land the winners contest reversing placings with the runner up and rider, Daire McConville sent to good advantage.

Keith Watson said: “We’ll aim him at the maiden hunterchase on Ulster Grand National day at Downpatrick.”

Handler Pat Turley, who trains in the centre of Downpatrick racecourse, claimed the hunt race with Declan Lavery aboard and advised the winner will go to the course proper for a maiden hurdle.

Templepatrick trainer, Colin McKeever, supplied the winner of the finale for novice riders, when Paddy McGuigan made all and steered ‘Tardee’ to a clear cut victory. The winner is owned by Wilson Dennison, who said: “If he’s not sold, he’ll run in a winners race next.”
