OMAGH jockey, Simon Torrens, last season’s champion con-ditional rider, landed the featured Bar One Handicap aboard the Joseph O’Brien trained, ‘Winner Takes It All’ on the final session of Bellewstown’s Summer Festival on Saturday.
The winner, owned by JP McManus, always travelled extr-emely well prior to leading before the final flight in the £40,000 festival winner to score in style and gets an automatic entry in the Galway Hurdle for winning.
Torrens said: “That good ground is important to him and he did it really well. It was my first time riding him. I’ll leave plans up to Joseph (O’Brien) and Mr McManus and Fran Berry (Racing Manger), but I’d love to ride him in a Galway Hurdle, if he does end up going there. He was travelling so well, I had no option but go on before the last.”
Warrenpoint handler, Leanne Breen was also on the scoreboard at the popular festival, when ‘That’s Mad’, runner up at Down Royal’s Derby meeting, won the valuable sprint handicap on Thursday even-ing with top jockey, Kevin Manning again taking the mount.
Breen said: “He ran very well here last year and was beaten by a good filly in ‘A Step Too Far’. In those better races it suits him, as he has a better pace to aim at. He was very tough there today, as it wasn’t straightforward for him. He’s done it well. He’s run against a lot of those horses before and they have beaten him, so to get up today is good and means that he’s improving. We’ll see what the handicapper does, but there is plenty of races for him. We’ll keep him busy this year, as he’s getting tougher and taking his races well.”
