50 September 17 1968 Lorry SM Farm

Thirty-three-year-old Mr Sam Gray, of Aghalee, who drives for Northern Ireland Eggs Ltd, Lisburn, has won the title of Britain’s Lorry Driver of the Year.

For Mr Gray, who drives a Ford D800 artic, it was a case of first time lucky for he has not entered for the contest before.

He won his place in the final through the Castlereagh eliminating contest earlier in the year – one of 22 eliminating centre throughout the country.

But for the final itself, Mr Gray could not bring his own vehicle over and he won through to the top ten run-off in a borrowed 33ft long Ford D800 artic.
