CALF scour and dehydration account for 40 per cent of calf deaths. Calf scour can cost £58/calf. Respiratory disease can cost £82/calf.
Four critical issues that must be promptly addressed to help the newborn calf realise its true genetic potential for health, growth, and productivity are:
n Boost newborns’ immunity in the gut and lungs;
n Kickstart the population of bene-ficial microbes in the gut;
n Assist in the early development of gut structures and absorptive capacity;
n Supplying adequate fluids and electrolytes.
Provita Animal Health manufactures a range of products to support calf health.
Response paste is an oral paste providing energy, colostrum, bene-ficial bacteria, egg powder and vitamins. It provides energy to kick-start newborn calves metabolism and get it up and sucking quicker. Egg powder helps to support natural defences and gives calf the best start.
Beneficial bacteria will help exclude harmful pathogens from attaching to the gut wall and improve digestion. Vitamins help to counter common deficiencies in newborn calves.
Response is also available in capsule and powder form. Response paste is particularly useful at birth and in the initial weeks of life for calves to boost gut health and survival. It is particularly useful in the following groups: premature, difficult, or pro-longed calving, multiples, during scour outbreak, adopted or bought-in calves.
Response paste can be used dur-
ing periods on farm when disease outbreaks traditionally occur.
Invariably this will happen be-tween 7-14 days of age and it is not coincidental. This is during a time when there is an immunity gap for the calf, when passive immunity from the maternal colostrum wanes and the calf slowly starts to build up its own acquired immunity. This “immunity gap” is a high risk period for infection so calves will need particular attention to push them through this period with no setbacks.
Prolyte Extra differs from most other fluid and electrolyte products on the market in two important respects. Apart from the composition of the normal fluids and electrolytes, it also contains glycine and ascorbic acid.
The absorption of glucose and sodium from the gut is known to be enhanced and maximised when glycine is present.
The overall absorptive process of electrolytes and water is uniquely enhanced in Prolyte Extra by the
presence of glycine, which
acts as a pump to maximise and expedite this absorption. This reduces the risk of hypoglycaemia (low sugar) and acidosis, which are the predominant reasons for deaths in scouring calves.
Ascorbic acid is an immunostimulant, antioxidant, and a protectant against scour in calves. Calves are quite deficient in vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and hence an extra supply in Prolyte Extra helps the calf’s immunity.
Ascorbic acid stimulates antibody production and acts to supplement the protective effects of colostrum. In addition, it maintains the defensive structure of the gut lining, hence minimising the risk of “leaky gut” syndrome. It protects calves against infections and has a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect which is vital for the young calf. Prolyte Extra also contains beneficial bacteria.
ProVitaMin mineral and vitamin drench helps to boost calf performance and optimise fertility pre-bulling with broad spectrum vitamin and minerals. It is a highly concentrated formula to help elevate levels quickly to help correct deficiencies. Metals are chelated for slow release.
ProVitaMin Cattle is a highly con-centrated complex mineral and vitamin drench that can be used for adult cattle and young calves.
It comprises 26 broad spectrum elements, supplying chelated min-erals, vitamins and nutrients to swiftly elevate levels to boost performance and fertility.
ProVitaMin is an easy to use solution with supplementary rates as low as 1mL per 10kg for calves up to a maximum of 50mL for adult cattle. ProVitaMin Cattle and ProVitaMin ColSelB12 are available in 5, 2.5 and one litre packs.
Your livestock can have access to the best available forage and feed, but if their vitamin and mineral status is off balance, they will not be utilising the nutrients from feed to its full potential. Marginal trace element deficiencies can reduce growth, reproduction, and impact health, even if they show few clinical signs of deficiency.
Winter is a high-risk time for pneumonia infection, which is the most common cause of death in all cattle above one month old. It inevitably results in poorly performing calves. There are several steps farmers can take to prevent pneumonia which include not only vaccination but also by ensuring that ventilation and air quality are optimised.
A continual flow of fresh air throughout a shed is important, and research has shown that animals perform better in clean air. In well ventilated sheds with clean air, animals are much less likely to develop respiratory infections because there is less droplet infection and pathogen inhalation.
Provita Promist is a unique air purifier containing a blend of natural organic acids, essential oils and wetting agents which together help control the levels of particulate matter, dust and reduce ammonia in the housing of intensively reared livestock. It can be used when new calves/cattle are introduced into houses, or during still weather conditions with stagnant airflow circulation, or until air flow improves in the shed.
Promist can also be used daily in houses that have permanently poor air flow. It should be used above and around the cattle and will purify the air, the surfaces, and the animals. Its herb content will provide an expectorant effect helping to expel organisms from the respiratory tract.
According to field reports, using Promist daily in the cattle/calf shed for the first month or so after housing, has resulted in beneficial results. “We didn’t have one case of pneumonia to deal with last year and the calves responded in spades regarding the growth rates they achieved,” reported one user. Pneumonia cannot be defeated unless air quality, air circulation and air cleanliness are heightened and maximised.
