Carla Lockhart has written to DAERA Minister Edwin Poots stressing the need for a support package for local agricultural shows.
The Upper Bann DUP MP has been liaising with the Minister to ensure financial assistance is provided to show organisations.
Ms Lockhart said: “Agricultural shows are much loved events right across Northern Ireland, showcasing the best of rural life and our agriculture industry.
“Thousands of people attend and it is a fixture in the calendar for many people.
“However the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has been absolutely devastating.
“Shows have had to be cancelled, many now for two consecutive years.
“Yet while we have lost the public benefit of these events, we should also recognise the impact on show organisers of cancellation and no income.
“Ongoing costs and overheads continue to have to be met. Yet with no revenue, this has provided challenging.
“That is why I have been working with the Agriculture Minister, and show representatives, to secure financial assistance to help show organisers through this crisis.
“We need these shows to survive the pandemic so we can once again enjoy these showcase events as a community once more.
“I have written to the Minister to press for a package to be released as soon as possible, at a level that meets the increasingly pressing need.
“I know the Minister recognises the need and is keen to help. I am hopeful an announcement can be made soon and that it will allow shows to plan for the future.”
