Neill family takes top honours at Lurgan Show

Saturday past was the annual Lurgan Agricultural Show located in the won-derful setting of Lurgan Park with its extensive gr-assed area sandwiched between the mature trees and the man-made lake.

Lurgan Park covers an extensive area of 259 acres making it the largest urban park in Northern Ireland, which greatly enhances any visitors enjoyment of this agricultural event.

This one day event has always been a popular show for pure bred poultry exhibitors and this year was no exception with a large number of new poultry enthusiasts exhibiting as well as the established stalwarts such as Patricia Swandel and Gordon Walker.

The event had the honour of being judged by two local exceptionally experienced poultry and waterfowl keepers, Pete Dick and Robert McKibbin, who between them bring a wealth of knowledge of keeping, breeding and exhibiting a vast array of breeds.

The show champion award went to a wonderful Buff Orpington cockerel owned by the Neill family from Portadown and exhibited by brothers Matthew and Ryan.

Their father David said: “We had a great day at a very light hearted and enjoyable show.”

The Reserve Show Champion award went to Trevor Gardiner from Waringstown for a Ko Shamo female.

The top awards were as follows:

Show Champion and Best Large Heavy Soft Feather: M&R Neill’s Buff Orpington male.

Reserve Show Champion and Best Asian Game: Trevor Gardiner’s Ko Shamo female.

Best Waterfowl: M&R Neill’s white Call drake.

Best Heavy Soft Feather Bantam: Gordan Walker from Gilford for a black German Langshan female.

Best Large Light Soft Feather: Ross Hewitt’s Welsummer male.

Best Light Soft Feather Bantam: Brian and Margaret King from Ballymena with an Ancona male.

Best True Bantam: William Moorecroft from Tandragee for a Silver Sebright pullet.

Best Rare Breed: William Moorcroft’s Vorwerk pullet.

Best Modern Game: John Neill from Portadown with a Modern Game bantam pullet.

Best Large Game Fowl: David Baird from Banbridge for an Oxford Game.

Best Junior Exhibitors Entry: Jack Graham from Dromara with a Spangled Old English Game female.
