THE board of Northern Ireland Food Chain Certification (NIFCC) has announced the appointment of Dr Geoff Thompson, BEM, as chief executive designate. Dr Thompson is currently the senior policy officer for animal health and welfare, pigs, and poultry within the Ulster Farmers’ Union and will assume the role on June 29.
Welcoming the appointment, Robin Irvine, chairman of NIFCC, said: “The directors of NIFCC are delighted to welcome Geoff Thompson as the new Chief Executive of NIFCC. This is a new role within the business, and it highlights our vision for the continued development of the organisation.
“Geoff comes with an impressive record of ongoing academic achievement and he is currently completing a MSc in business for agri-food and rural enterprise through CAFRE.
“His employment history gives him valuable experience in the agri-supply chain and a high level of industry involvement through his work with the Ulster Farmers’ Union. His record is one of high achievement and significant contribution – including his roles with the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster and Rural Youth Europe for which he was awarded the British Empire Medal.”
Geoff Thompson, chief executive designate, also commented saying: “I am both delighted and humbled to be entrusted with the role of chief executive, and I look forward to working with the entire team at NIFCC and the wider agri-food industry as we face into the current challenges of Covid-19 and continued market volatility.
“At this time, more than ever, I am certain of the important role that robust and impartial quality control systems play in safeguarding the integrity, reputation, and continued market access for our industry. I look forward to playing my part with NIFCC as we continue our mission to protect and add value to the Northern Ireland agri-food industry.”
