Northern Ireland breeders’ success at Carlisle

COUNTY Tyrone Blue Texel breeders Samantha Allen and Allen Shortt had a trip to remember at the recent ‘Festive Fireworks’ in-lamb and ewe lamb sale of Blue Texel sheep held at Harrison & Hetherington’s Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Thursday, December 10.

Securing second top price of the day at 5000gns was March born ewe lamb Derg Elle, a daughter of imported stock sire ‘Derg Cracker’ and of the 2019 Balmoral breed champion ‘Derg CocoChanel’. Successful purchaser was Nigel Hogan from County Carlow as a foundation female for his Rathnashan flock.

Not far behind at 2500gns was ewe lamb Derg Evora ET, this time by renowned sire ‘Saltire Blue Derek’ and out of one of the flock’s top performing ewes ‘Derg Beyoncé’ that has previously bred lambs to 3800gns. She heads to Benburb breeders Mervyn and Chris Robinson for their Milltown flock.

At 1500gns was another ewe lamb Derg Emmalee ET, again sired by ‘Saltire Blue Derek’ and out of ‘Derg CocoChanel’, this stylish ewe lamb heads home with Jonny Rankin, County Derry, to join his Gort Messan flock. Overall the Derg Flock achieved a tremendous pen average of 1800gns for the seven ewe lambs sold on the day.
