THE Regional Championships, held at Ian Stark’s in Scotland, is always a super event for Pony Club members from Northern Ireland (Area 17) to attend after they have qualified at the area competitions.
In the dressage championships on the first day, there were two Killultagh teams and one Iveagh team. Katie Topley (Killultagh) came individually seventh and Katie Haire (Iveagh) came eighth, while Grace Moore (East Antrim) was just out of the ribbons.
The Killultagh teams came 12th and 19th and the Iveagh team of Zara Smyth, Sam McElroy, Katie Haire and Simone Leathem came 15th. All rode well in the strong competition.
The next day was the eventing championships over a very challenging course, so the competitors all had to ride with great courage to do their best. The individuals were Abbie Wylie (Tullylagan), who came an amazing seventh place in her arena; Caoimhe Crozier (East Down), who did a very good dressage test and went clear show jumping; Erin McCrea on ‘Woodrow’ (East Antrim), who came a very good third in her arena, while Heather Fulton (Route Hunt) won her arena with a fantastic dressage test! Patrick Cunningham was fourth in his arena with clear cross-country and show jumping. A talented group of individuals!
In the eventing team competition, the Iveaghs had two teams and the Killultaghs had one team. The Iveagh Zebras came an amazing fourth place; Zara Smyth on ‘Tilly’s Comet’ was 10th in her arena, Molly Davidson on ‘Monochrome Boy’ was seventh; Bethany Smith on ‘Golden Grove’ was fifth and the fourth member was Katy Haire on ‘Galway Girl’.
The Iveagh Penguins came eighth – Katy Robinson on ‘Duncarbery Cascade’, Simone Leathem on ‘Cody Showcase’, Lara Jameson on ‘Curios George’ and Sam McElroy on ‘Tutti Fruiti’, who came an amazing individual second in his arena. A fantastic performance for the two teams.
A big thank you from all the Iveaghs to Mickey McCann, who was in charge of all the teams and did a wonderful job in encouraging them all to do so well.
The next day was the show jumping, where the Iveagh had three teams, Killultagh had one team and Tullylagan had an individual.
Individually, Nathan O’Neill on ‘Pagan’ (Killultagh) came an amazing second place, while Molly Davidson came 12th and Poppy Moore on ‘Crecora Angel’ came 13th. The team places with Iveagh were eighth for Amber Bradley on ‘Flynn Rider’, Katie Robinson on ‘Duncarbbery Cascade’, Poppy Moore on ‘Crecora Angel’ and Sam McElroy on ‘Tutti Fruiti’. While the next Iveagh team was in 10th place with Simone Leathem on ‘Cody Showcase’, Emma Irwin on ‘Heaven Scent’, Ruby Proctor on ‘Bayview Lady’ and Bethany Smith. The third Iveagh Team were just out of the ribbons, they were Molly Davidson, Katy Haire, Cody Martin and Lara Jameson. The Killultagh team were again just out of the ribbons and they were Lucy McDowell, Katie Topley, Nathan O’Neill and Rosie Herron, but they all jumped well.
This was a fantastic result for Northern Ireland Pony Club members coming home with four team placings in the regional show jumping and eventing championships and 17 individual placings in all three disciplines. In total, the members came home with 27 rosettes – much to the joy of Liz Lowry, the Area Representative, who was delighted with how all her members rode and was very proud of them all!
